You are Listening to Music WRONG
Most people in the modern world listen to music using a streaming platform like spotify or apple music (as you might know). Regarthless of how I feel about these kinds of platforms buisness model and quality of the service, this post will only be about how these services changed the way we listen to music
Playlists
Making playlists and song compilations has never been easier. You just open the app and click on the songs you want to ad. This by itself isn't an issue but in my opinion creates one. Sudently people are only listening to each others playlists sometimes with only 1 song per artist, and overall lots of songs which have been completly stripped from their respective albums.
By limiting yourself to playlists you are disconecting yourself from the artist, sudently you don't care about the artists anymore, just the songs. Really, how can you say you like an artist by listenibg to only 5 songs? Big bands suffer the most with this, you can easly see people with Metalica, Nirvana or even Tool shirts and hoodies and can't name 5 songs and sometimes the songs they listen are the ones that don't realy have anything to do with the bands overall discography.
Albums
Albums are more than just a playlist, the artists order the songs in the way that they see fit for their own music, in my opinion its the best way to listen to a song for the first time. Many songs have intros and outros that bleed into the next song in the album, sometimes entire albums have this effect that its entirely lost when playing the same songs out of order.
The entire mood of the song can also change when played from the album and outside the album.
Conclusion
If theres anything I think you should take from this is to try to listen to entire albums of the artists you think you like, because bot only you are prpbably missing out on many songs, you might also discover that you dont really like an artist, just a few songs...
If possible try to listen to these albums with gapless playback to really experience the bleeding of these songs into one another.
Music is entirely subjective and theres no real issue in listoning only to what you like without caring for the artist or album. But you might be missing out. Trust me.
